Frequently asked questions.
GENERAL FAQs
Are you a local company?
Yes… and we have been since 2000. We are about as local as it gets. We work exclusively in the Park City area. You’ll see our owner coaching local kids’ athletics and volunteering in our schools. You’ll see our employees in the grocery store, at the skate park, and at some our finer fast food joints. Many of our guys work winters at our local resorts. To quote our job listing, “Our company possesses a culture of employee camaraderie, strong client relationships, and of passion for the place we work and play… the Wasatch Mountains.”
How do I get a bid?
You can call, text, email, or request a bid via our website. If you don't get an immediate answer, we'll follow up asap. If you end up leaving a message be sure to let us know what services you're interested in and the street address of your property.
How will you bill me and how do I pay?
We will email you a monthly invoice. Invoices can be paid online or one can mail in a check.
Can I make recommendations to the crew while they're at my house working?
YES! We encourage our employees to say 'hello' if they see anyone home and we love it when clients are proactive in telling us how they like for things to look around their property. So please come out and give the guys a chat (and maybe a cold drink?).
Do you do installs and/or projects?
We don’t. Many landscape companies focus on the big-ticket projects and view the maintenance side of their business as just a steady income stream. At Fine Landscape, we focus on the maintenance. Our business is keeping your existing landscape in great condition. If you have a project, we’re happy to recommend someone.
LAWN CARE FAQs
Can you mow every-other-week?
Sure, but lawn growth dictates this. If you continue to water regularly and the lawn is super long, then we'll need to stick with a weekly mowing schedule. If growth slows (typically late summer) and two-week growth won't slow the crew down, then we're happy to reduce your mowing.
Can you bag the grass when you mow?
Our bid (and general practice) is to leave the clippings on the lawn... that's nitrogen after all! If you prefer to have your clippings hauled off, we can but will need to adjust your mowing price.
When should I water my lawn? How frequently?
We need to water here in Park City in the evening / night. Evaporation is our number one enemy, so we want to let that water to have as long as possible to soak in. Many places in the country water early morning, but this is usually done to avoid fungus from growing (which is not a problem for us here in this high desert).
Can you haul off some debris/trash I have?
Absolutely! We have the trucks/trailers just for this.
Why do I have a brown spot in my lawn?
Nine times out of ten this is an irrigation issue. Common culprit is debris in the nozzle of a sprinkler head or the head not rotating properly. We would look at irrigation first. If that's not it, there may be an issue with the soil.
What should we do with all the dead grass the voles left this winter?
Fortunately we don't have to deal with a lot of pests in our lawns in this growth zone. Unfortunately one of the ones we do deal with are voles (which look like small field mice). The good news is that your lawn will grow back. You need to simply rake up and discard the dead grass they've left behind. We offer this with our Spring Dethatching/Power Raking service.
AERATION, FERTILIZATION, IRRIGATION FAQs
Is aerating and fertilizing actually necessary?
Yes! Your grass is a plant. Like all plants, it needs water, sun, oxygen, and food. As a human, you'll be able to exist on a strict diet of bread and water and never leaving your house... but you won't look or feel great. Aeration is getting oxygen and water deep to your lawn's roots and breaking up the compaction of the soil (similar to you getting outside and exercising a bit). Fertilizer is food. Each application is different and each season we switch up the applications keeping the diet varied and healthy.
Can you haul off the aeration plugs?
We can, but it’s expensive. These plugs will break down in a matter of days and return nutrients back to the soil. If this is too messy because of your dog, you can request we not aerate the section your dog habitually uses?
Do you do irrigation repairs?
Yes!
Am I hurting the environment by fertilizing?
Great question! If you're over-fertilizing or spreading fertilizer into the street, then there's a chance you're hurting the environment (specifically our local water sources like East Canyon Creek). We “stack” our fertilizer applications to avoid run-off and to up our presence on your lawn so we can see what is happening.
Am I killing bees by killing weeds?
You may be killing a bee here or there, but our local bees are not dependent on dandelions. The largest threat to bees is not chemical, but the Verroa Mite leading to colony collapse. Also, large scale pesticide use in orchards can create serious damage to hives. We love bees and strongly encourage people to look into hosting their own hives and/or planting nectar rich plants throughout their landscape.
Do you use organic fertilizer?
We don't. We love organics (we eat organics!), but our experience is that organics do not work effectively in ornamental landscapes (which is what you likely have if you’re reading this). Our philosophy is to use traditional fertilizers responsibly. Our experience is that most companies using traditional organics do not use them responsibly and that organic or 'Eco' companies are often "green washing" what they're actually doing (often adding an organic additive to a traditional fertilizer program). If organics is a deal killer for you, we understand. Also, if we’re being honest… lawns have no business even being grown up here. Though they’re green, they are water/nutrient hogs (I’m looking at you, golf courses). Alas you, like me, are from an area of the country where having a lawn was the norm and it is used by either your pets, your kids, or simply for aesthetics. We get this. So our next best option is to care for it as responsibly as possible.
Is fertilizer safe for my dog? Kids?
We follow the safety labels placed on the product by the manufacturer. Their typical suggestion is staying off until dry. As a precaution, we prefer that your pets are kept off of treated areas until they have completely dried. If your pet has a known allergy to any lawn care product, please let us know so that we can take the necessary precautions. We choose products that have little or no adverse effect to animals or humans.
Do I need to water the fertilizer in?
You don't. The fertilizer we're using will need to be watered in eventually (your irrigation system or morning dew will accomplish this), but an immediate watering in is not necessary. If an herbicide (weed killer) has been applied, we actually want it to stay dry as long as possible.
Do you treat trees?
We do not fertilize or spray trees for pests. We do trim/prune them. Trees are an incredible investment and likely the greatest asset in your landscape. We strongly recommend you using a certified arborist for all tree care.
SNOW REMOVAL FAQs
Do you do snow removal?
Yes! Our snow removal service is unique in Park City in several different ways. Most noticeably we utilize a tractor-mounted snow blower as opposed to a truck/plow. This method is significantly easier on driveways and surrounding landscapes b/c our equip is lighter than a full-size pickup and b/c we are throwing the snow as opposed to pushing large piles off of your drive onto your landscape. We are also able to keep your entire driveway clear as opposed to piling up snow in areas normally set aside for parking. This method is especially helpful on a cul-de-sac where snow placement is limited. Another area that separates us is our service. We limit the areas our routes cover, therefore we are able to keep on top of what is happening in your neighborhood. We don't have a guy covering Jeremy Ranch to the Basin, out to Promontory and then up into Old Town. Instead we work exclusively in just two areas (2 routes in Jeremy Ranch and 3 routes in the Snyderville Basin).

Do you service my neighborhood in winter?
Due to the fact that we only blow snow with our tractors (whose max speed is about 14mph), we can only service certain neighborhoods. Currently we only service Jeremy Ranch, Sun Peak, Silver Springs, Ranch Place, Willow Creek, and the west side of Old Ranch Rd.
When do you come to remove snow?
We cannot clear snow for everyone the minute snow hits the driveway, but we do have leaving and returning for work/school in mind when we plan on when we go out. A typical morning route would be 330-730a and an afternoon route 2-5p. Ultimately, however, the weather dictates when we go. If it starts snowing at 7a and is expected to drop 2-3" over 3 hours... we typically won't go out until later that morning.
Is the winter a contract or do we pay per trip?
We pride ourselves in attempting to be out earlier and more frequently than other companies. All this said, we likely won't be your lowest bid... but we do feel that we offer the best product in town and that our pricing is fair and competitive. Contracts are five months (Nov-Mar) and cover 8 trips per month. Any trips over 8 in a given month will be billed the following month at 10% of the monthly rate. Nov-Mar are our billing months, however any snow that falls before or after these dates will be cleared.
Do you shovel walkways?
We do. This is an extra charge. The reason for the extra pricing for the walkway is that our driver performs this service which leaves our tractor idling on the property and slowing up the rest of the route.
